What to Know about Devon Rex Breed

Small but mighty, the Devon Rex cat is energetic and has a friendly temperament. Weighing usually between 6 and 9 pounds, these cats stop growing at around 12 months. Here are more things to know before adopting one of our kittens.

Health

The Devon Rex breed isn’t known for having excessive health issues, and at West Kootenay Kennels and Cattery, we take special care and responsibility to screen our cats and take stock of their health conditions. The average life expectancy of a Devon Rex is 12 to 15 years.

That said, there are a few conditions these cats are susceptible to and that potential adopters should know. The first is patellar luxation, which occurs when a kneecap pops out of its regular location. They’re also susceptible to Devon Rex myopathy, which is a muscle weakness condition that affects the head and neck.

Grooming

Devon Rex cats require minimal grooming thanks to their curly and sparse hairs. They don’t need to be brushed frequently and over brushing can lead to bald patches.

The best way to take care of your cat is to gently wipe their fur with a damp cloth once a week and give them a periodic wash. Also, regularly clean the inside of their ears to ensure wax buildup doesn’t cause any issues.

While there is no such thing as a completely hypoallergenic cat, our Devon Rex kitties for sale are as close to hypoallergenic as they can be. They only shed minimally and are considered to be the lowest maintenance shedding breeds.

Exercise

With their outgoing personalities, Devon Rex cats are naturally inclined toward exercise. Being high energy, they require lots of exercise, which you can help with by providing stimulating toys and teaching tricks.

Also, Devon Rex cats require lofty spaces while they’re playing and resting, so make sure you create a space to accommodate that.

Diet and Nutrition

Devon Rexes have big appetites and proper nutrition is vital for their growth and health. Choosing a high-quality commercial cat food that meets the specific nutritional needs of kittens is essential. Look for products that list meat as the first ingredient and avoid those with excessive fillers, artificial preservatives, or by-products.

Feeding schedules are important; for young kittens, feeding three to four times a day is typically recommended. As they grow older, you can gradually transition to two meals a day. Monitoring their food intake is crucial to prevent overfeeding, which can lead to obesity and related health issues. Adjust portion sizes as needed based on your kitten’s activity level and growth.
